By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 51-year-old mechanic from Carmelita Village found himself in legal trouble after he was discovered drunk on the George Price Highway earlier this week and resisted arrest during the incident.
Marcelino Adriano Trapp, a self-employed mechanic, appeared today before the Magistrate in Court #5, where he was arraigned on two charges: found drunk in a public place and resisting arrest. The offenses stemmed from an incident on Monday, April 7, near Mile 4 on the George Price Highway.
Police say officers conducting a checkpoint spotted Trapp staggering across the highway wearing a blue t-shirt, black cargo pants, and green Crocs. When Sergeant Aaron Neal approached Trapp and detected the smell of alcohol, he informed him of the offense and attempted to place him under arrest. However, Trapp resisted, pulling away from the officer and walking in the opposite direction. During the struggle, Trapp allegedly stomped on Sgt. Neal’s leg, causing him pain and nearly knocking him from the police vehicle.
Trapp pleaded guilty to both charges and did not contest the facts. In court, he admitted, “I was intoxicated, and I can’t contest it.” He further explained that he lives alone, has no family, and could afford to pay the fines.
The court fined Trapp $100 plus $5 court costs for being found drunk, due by May 30, and an additional $100 plus $5for resisting arrest, due by June 30. In default of either payment, he faces one week imprisonment per offense.
As a resident of the Cayo District, Trapp requested permission to make his payments at the Belmopan Magistrate’s Court, a request that was approved by the sitting magistrate.
