By Aaron Humes: Today, Tuesday, is the International Day of Remembrance of the Victims of Slavery and the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade.

The CARICOM Reparations Commission in a statement emphasized the necessity of recognizing the atrocities of slavery and their lasting impacts on descendants of African slaves. The statement aligns with the beginning of the United Nations-declared Second International Decade for People of African Descent (2025–2034), marking a renewed commitment to address the historical injustices stemming from colonization and enslavement.

“Today serves as a poignant moment to reflect on the horrors of this dark chapter in human history,” stated the Commission. “We remember those who perished, honor their resilience, and recognize their humanity that was unjustly denied.”

The Commission highlighted how people of African descent are still grappling with the legacies of slavery, manifested in systemic inequalities and racial discrimination prevalent in various sectors, including education and healthcare. Reports indicate high levels of youth unemployment, intergenerational poverty, and continued denial of fundamental human rights among African-descended communities.

As part of its ongoing efforts, the CARICOM Reparations Commission insists on the need for reparatory justice and calls for the global community to acknowledge these legacies. “We urge everyone to recognize the obligation to promote healing, reconciliation, and the restoration of dignity to the victims and their descendants,” the Commission stated.
