By Zoila Palma:  The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has deployed a three-member Election Observation Mission to Barbados ahead of the country’s General Election scheduled for 11 February 2026.

The mission was sent following an invitation from the Government of Barbados dated 27 January 2026, and will be in the country from 5 to 13 February.

The team is led by Ian S. Hughes, Supervisor of Elections of the Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission, and includes Josephine Tamai, Chief Elections Officer of Belize, as Deputy Chief of Mission, and Andrew Smith, Regional Manager of the Electoral Commission of Jamaica.

The observers are supported by CARICOM Secretariat staff and have already begun stakeholder engagements, meeting with senior police officials, the Barbados Christian Council, and members of the media.

In the coming days, the mission is expected to meet with Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley, Opposition Leader Ralph Thorne, Chair of the Electoral and Boundaries Commission Ramon Alleyne, Chief Electoral Officer Sherland Turton, as well as other political parties and civil society groups. These consultations are intended to assess the pre-election climate and Barbados’ readiness for the polls.

On Election Day, the CARICOM team will observe all stages of the voting process, including the opening and closing of polling stations, voting, ballot counting, and the announcement of results, as well as the immediate post-election environment.

A Preliminary Statement will be issued before the team departs on 13 February, followed by a Final Report to CARICOM Secretary-General Dr. Carla Barnett, which will later be made public.
