By Aaron Humes: Governments of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) are gearing up to send humanitarian supplies to Cuba. The announcement was made by CARICOM Chairman, Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew, during the 50th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government held from February 24 to 27 in St Kitts and Nevis.

The humanitarian initiative is being coordinated by the CARICOM Secretariat in Georgetown, Guyana. Among the crucial items earmarked for shipment are powdered milk, including baby formula, essential non-perishable food items like beans, wheat flour, rice, and canned goods. Additionally, basic medical supplies, solar panels, batteries, and water tanks will also be included in this vital aid package.

This humanitarian effort receives a significant boost from the Government of Mexico, which has pledged its support by identifying local suppliers capable of delivering the necessary goods to the designated port. Notably, Mexico will also cover the shipping costs from its shores to Cuba, ensuring that the humanitarian supplies reach those in need as swiftly as possible.

As the Caribbean community comes together in this endeavor, the aim is not only to alleviate the pressing need for basic necessities in Cuba but also to strengthen regional ties and showcase CARICOM’s commitment to solidarity in times of crisis. The shipping of these supplies is expected to commence shortly.
