By Hugh O’Brien: The Secretariat of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has issued a short statement following the US military strike in Venezuela. The statement was issued following a meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government which was held in the wee hours of Saturday, 3rd January, 2026.
In it’s statement the Secretariat said “CARICOM is actively monitoring the situation which is of grave concern to the Region with possible implications for neighbouring countries.”
US President Donald Trump confirmed that on Saturday American forces carried out a major operation in Venezuela. And since the issuing of the statement by CARICOM, the US President posted that the military operations led to the capture and removal of President Nicolas Maduro.
Trump made the announcement in a post on Truth Social, saying Maduro and his wife were detained and taken out of the country after what he described as a coordinated effort involving U.S. authorities. He did not disclose operational details or confirm where Maduro was taken.
Later on Saturday, US Senator Mike Lee reported that U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio informed him that Maduro was taken into custody as part of a law enforcement action and is expected to stand trial in the US. Lee further stated that recent military strikes were carried out to “protect and defend those executing the arrest warrant.”
The Senator added that Rubio anticipates no further U.S. action in Venezuela, now that Maduro is reportedly in U.S. custody.
CARICOM, in its statement, said that the Caribbean block of countries “will continue to update the people of the Region as more information is received”.
