By Horace Palacio: The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) expressed grave concern over the worsening humanitarian crisis in Cuba caused by the 62-year-old U.S. embargo in a statement released on July 30, 2024. CARICOM leaders reiterated their call for the lifting of the “unjust unilateral financial, economic, and trade embargo” imposed by the U.S. government.

In light of the severe humanitarian situation, CARICOM Heads of Government agreed to provide material support to Cuba. The statement also criticized the U.S. State Department’s ongoing designation of Cuba as a State Sponsor of Terrorism, labeling it as “wrong and offensive.” CARICOM demanded Cuba’s immediate removal from the list.

The statement followed the Forty-Seventh Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community held in St. George’s, Grenada. The conference focused on regional issues, including the ongoing crisis in Haiti and the impact of climate change on the Caribbean.

CARICOM’s condemnation of the U.S. embargo aligns with the international community’s overwhelming rejection of the policy. The United Nations General Assembly has repeatedly voted to condemn the embargo, with the U.S. and a few allies being the only countries consistently voting against the resolution.

The embargo has severely impacted Cuba’s economy and limited its access to essential goods and services, exacerbating the humanitarian crisis. CARICOM’s commitment to providing material support to Cuba highlights the region’s solidarity with the Cuban people and its opposition to the U.S. embargo.
