By Horace Palacio: As global trade tensions escalate, CARICOM Chair Mia Amor Mottley is warning Caribbean citizens to prepare for a wave of rising prices. Following the United States’ announcement of sweeping new tariffs—including a 10% baseline duty on imports from 60+ countries—many Caribbean goods are expected to get more expensive.
Speaking on the regional impact, Mottley said the Caribbean is heavily reliant on imports, and that most consumer products—from electronics to groceries—either come from the U.S. or pass through it. That means even indirect tariffs will ripple through to every Caribbean home.
“We are on the precipice of a global trade war,” she said. “This will affect everyone—from farmers to shopkeepers.”
Mottley urged citizens not to dismiss this as a distant issue, warning that the cost of living could climb significantly. “If you buy food, if you buy electronics, it will impact you,” she stressed.
