By Aaron Humes: The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the Organization of American States (OAS) have issued statements in response to today’s military actions by the United States in Venezuela, emphasizing the importance of diplomatic dialogue and respect for international law.

Today, Saturday, the Bureau of the Conference of Heads of Government from CARICOM convened in Jamaica to discuss the implications of the ongoing crisis in Venezuela. The leaders expressed deep concern about the potential ramifications of the U.S. military intervention. They reaffirmed their commitment to the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity as outlined in the United Nations Charter.
“The Region reiterates its call for peaceful dialogue through diplomatic channels to ensure Venezuela’s stability, good governance, democracy and prosperity for the people of Venezuela. CARICOM remains ready to support all such efforts, in a spirit of cooperation and mutual respect,” the CARICOM Bureau stated. They further pledged that “every effort is being taken to ensure the safety and security of citizens of the Region. The Bureau will continue to monitor the multifaceted impact of this evolving situation and the implications for economic activity within the Community, particularly air travel.”
Meanwhile, OAS Secretary-General Albert R. Ramdin echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the OAS’s dedication to preventing further escalation. In a statement this afternoon, Ramdin called for respect for international law and human rights, urging all actors involved in the Venezuelan crisis to engage in constructive dialogue.
“Whatever the circumstances, all actors must fully respect international law and the applicable inter-American legal framework, including the peaceful settlement of disputes, respect for human rights, and the protection of civilian life and critical infrastructure. It is also essential that Venezuela’s path forward be grounded in governance based on the will of its people. Existing institutional arrangements—including the country’s constitutional order—provide an important basis on which to build. Sustainable stability and democratic legitimacy can only be achieved through peaceful means, inclusive dialogue, and strong institutions,” said Ramdin.
A meeting of the OAS Permanent Council has been scheduled to further discuss this sensitive situation and explore potential next steps as the region braces for the ongoing crisis. As developments unfold, the situation in Venezuela remains precarious, drawing attention from nations across the Americas and highlighting the urgent need for diplomatic solutions to restore peace and stability.
