By Zoila Palma: Health leaders from 19 Caribbean nations gathered this week for a regional workshop focused on strengthening the elimination of mother-to-child transmission (EMTCT) of HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B.
Organized by PAHO with support from CARICOM and the UN, the two-day event highlights the region’s progress and ongoing efforts in maternal and child health. Countries shared success stories and action plans, with Belize, Jamaica, and others showcasing recent EMTCT certifications.
Despite notable achievements, PAHO data shows rising congenital syphilis cases, underlining the need for continued vigilance. The workshop reinforces the Caribbean’s commitment to health equity and sustained protection for mothers and children.
