By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Tropical Storm Melissa is rapidly intensifying in the Caribbean and is expected to become a major hurricane by Sunday, posing a severe threat to Jamaica and parts of the northern Caribbean.
As of Saturday morning, the storm was located about 165 miles southeast of Kingston, Jamaica, with maximum sustained winds near 70 mph. Melissa is moving slowly westward and could strengthen into a Category 4 or even Category 5 hurricane by the time it nears Jamaica late Monday or early Tuesday.
Meteorologists warn that Melissa could unleash life-threatening flooding, destructive winds, and storm surges. Up to 25 inches of rain are expected across parts of Jamaica and southwest Haiti, with local totals reaching 35 inches in the Tiburon Peninsula.
At least three deaths have already been reported in Haiti due to flooding and landslides, and one death in the Dominican Republic, where thousands have been displaced.
Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness has urged citizens to take immediate precautions, saying, “You have been given enough notice that Melissa is coming and that it could be disastrous, so take all measures to protect yourself.”
Hospitals across Jamaica are now in emergency mode, and officials are preparing to close airports within 24 hours once hurricane warnings intensify.
Although Belize is not currently in Melissa’s direct path, officals are closely monitoring the system as it continues its slow, unpredictable movement across the Caribbean.
