By Zoila Palma:  The Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) reaffirmed its leadership in climate adaptation with a 4-day regional workshop held in San Pedro, Belize, from May 27–30, 2025.

The event, titled Developing Practical Skills to Build Bankable Climate Change Adaptation Projects in the Caribbean, brought together 30 participants from 11 Caribbean nations to enhance their capacity to design impactful, fundable climate adaptation initiatives.

Hosted in collaboration with the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC) and the Protected Areas Conservation Trust (PACT), the workshop focused on turning climate action concepts into viable projects eligible for global financing.

Participants—ranging from National Implementing Entities to Designated Authorities—engaged in technical sessions led by CDB experts on topics including the Adaptation Fund’s project cycle, fiduciary standards, and proposal development. Dr. Nesha Beharry-Borg, Project Coordinator in CDB’s Environmental Sustainability Unit, emphasized the Bank’s continued commitment to helping member countries access global climate finance. “This workshop reinforces CDB’s commitment to helping Borrowing Member Countries implement solutions that protect lives, livelihoods, and ecosystems,” she said.

The workshop also featured a field visit to Sarteneja Village in northern Belize, where participants saw firsthand how Adaptation Fund resources are supporting fire management and safeguarding coastal communities.

Garth Simon, a technical officer from Antigua and Barbuda, noted the urgency of access to climate finance in Small Island Developing States, calling the workshop “invaluable” for translating ideas into action.

Since its initial accreditation in 2016 and re-accreditation in 2023, the CDB has played a central role in helping Caribbean nations navigate and benefit from global climate finance mechanisms.

By building technical capacity and sharing best practices—such as those from its successful BRACCVAS project in Saint Lucia—the Bank continues to support the region’s efforts to build climate resilience and sustainable development in the face of intensifying environmental challenges.
