By Zoila Palma: The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) joins the global observance of World Cancer Day, reaffirming their commitment to prevention, early detection, and care.
This year’s theme, “United by Unique,” reminds that while every cancer journey is different, the collective response must be people-centred, inclusive, and compassionate.
“Cancers are among the leading causes of death in the Region. Breast and prostate cancers are the most prevalent cancers among women and men, respectively. However, many risk factors are modifiable—meaning individual and collective action can reduce complications and support healthier, more productive lives,” CARICOM noted.
Early screening and treatment save lives.
Persons with a family history and predisposing risk factors are encouraged to seek information on self-care and access routine check-ups to support early detection and timely treatment.
“Making informed, healthy lifestyle choices and avoiding known risk factors, including smoking and unhealthy diets, can significantly reduce the impact of cancer across our Region,” CARICOM added.
CARICOM urges everyone to participate in awareness, action, and support, to strengthen the fight against cancer.
