By Zoila Palma: The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is set to commemorate the 10th anniversary of International Girls in ICT Day on April 23, 2026, joining global efforts to promote greater participation of girls and young women in the technology sector.
The annual observance highlights the need to expand opportunities in information and communication technology (ICT), a field increasingly central to economic growth and the future of work.
Regional activities will be led by the CARICOM Girls in ICT Partnership under the theme “Empower, Educate, Elevate: Building a Future-Ready CARICOM with Girls in ICT.”
The event will be anchored at the CARICOM Secretariat and feature an opening ceremony with remarks from Secretary-General Carla Barnett, CARICOM Youth Ambassadors Dean Shakiah Lewis, and Cosmas Luckyson Zavazava of the International Telecommunication Union.
The 2026 observance will bring together educators, industry professionals, development partners, and students from across the region to discuss strategies for closing the gender gap in the digital sector. Participants are expected to engage in dialogue, share experiences, and explore pathways to increase female representation in ICT fields.
A series of virtual sessions will be livestreamed throughout the day, featuring discussions such as “Youth Spotlight: Next Gen Leaders Speak” and “Achieving Gender Parity in the Age of AI,” alongside practical coding activities.
