By Zoila Palma: The National Coconut Development Strategy and Roadmap Validation Workshop was held on December 16, 2025, marking a major step forward in strengthening Belize’s coconut sector.
The workshop was facilitated by the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI), with support from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and New Growth Industries.
The strategy is a key deliverable under FAO’s global One Country One Priority Product (OCOP) Initiative, which assists countries in advancing sustainable agricultural development by focusing on priority value chains.
The validated National Coconut Development Strategy and Roadmap provide a coordinated framework to guide the sustainable, inclusive, and environmentally responsible growth of Belize’s coconut industry, with an emphasis on strengthening production, enhancing value addition, expanding market opportunities, and building resilience across the value chain.
The validation workshop brought together stakeholders from across the coconut value chain and all regions of the country, who reviewed, discussed, and endorsed the proposed strategic directions to ensure national ownership and alignment with sector priorities.
Moving forward, the Coconut Sector Taskforce will play a central role in coordinating implementation of the roadmap, fostering collaboration among stakeholders, and supporting the effective execution of the strategy.
