By Zoila Palma: Belizean car dealers are up in arms following a memo from the Customs department that indicated that it is adjusting the administrative procedure for the valuation of motor vehicles.
Belizeans purchase salvage vehicles from U.S. auctions and those are brought to Belize and sold.
Most vehicles in Belize were bought in U.S. auctions.
Earlier this week, transmigrantes blocked the Northern Border crossing condemning the legislation and calling out the Government saying that this will significantly impact them.
The transmigrantes say that the customs department is just slapping them with this new fee and after they questioned the authorities about it, they were forced off the compound.
During an 7News interview with car dealer Darwin Blanco, he said that custom officers and brokers are “crooks.”
“I took in 3 Sienna vans last year, 3. Along with some other people. The brother that I was dealing with made it clear time that the customs officer gotta get his portion. And for each one of those vans. He changed me 1,800 dollars. $1,800 dollars for each one of those vans. AND OUT OF THAT 1,800 dollars that he charged for each one of those vans, 800 dollars went to his pocket. 3 vans: $800, $800. $800. That was only one me. That was only for my four vehicles,” Blanco explained.
“That did not include the other guys that were in line waiting to be seen by the same broker and customs officer,” he added.
Blanco says that this is a daily occurrence at the Corozal border with custom agents stealing from the Belizean government the Belizean people.
Blanco further called on Prime Minister John Briceno and the Government of Belize to address this matter urgently.
“So, I’m begging your Prime Minister re consider the choice you guys have made as far as increasing eon these fees that you guys are going to put on these young me. Because a lot of these young men, they are not making a lot of money.”
