By Horace Palacio: A group of cane farmers in Bella Vista, Corozal, have blocked the highway as part of a protest, causing significant disruption including the halting of ADO bus services.
The protest, which started early this afternoon, saw a large gathering of cane farmers who are reportedly expressing their grievances over unresolved issues in the sugar industry.
The situation escalated when an ADO bus, en route to Belize City, was unable to pass through the impromptu roadblock. Passengers were seen stranded, with the bus company scrambling to provide alternative solutions for their travel.
Sources close to the protesting group stated that the farmers are demanding immediate attention to their concerns, which include fair pricing, better working conditions, and a resolution to ongoing disputes with the American Sugar Refining/Belize Sugar Industries (ASR/BSI).
Local authorities, including the police and representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, are on the scene, attempting to negotiate with the protesters to clear the highway. However, as of the latest reports, the blockade remains in place, with no immediate resolution in sight.
