Candid DPP says Budna investigative file contains ‘less than nothing’ – not enough for prosecution ‘at this time’

By Aaron Humes: Director of Public Prosecutions Cheryl-Lynn Vidal says her office has possession of the investigative file by Police into the alleged abduction of Joseph Budna in August since last Wednesday.

And, to say the least, she was not impressed and had not expected to be – but she was both candid and scathing about what Police had gathered and what her office can do with it.

“It is not a thin file; I too was expecting a thin file. It is not a thin file. I was also expecting – and I apologize as Director for saying this – but I was also expecting that there would have been nothing in the file. What I was not expecting was that there would be less than nothing in the file, which is really my characterization of what has been put before me. But we are looking at the file as a team and we are deciding where we are going to take it from there,” she told reporters this afternoon in Belize City.

Asked whether arrests might happen, she said, inter alia, not any time soon: “Based on what was sent to me, at this very moment, there cannot possibly be an arrest of anyone, because very few people saw anything, and what they saw, they are not too sure about what it is they saw, so at the moment, no, there cannot be an arrest of anyone at all.” She further elaborated that “there can be words that are of no effect; there can be words that don’t really say anything.”

Budna remains incarcerated in Guatemala, while a Constitutional claim is before Belize’s courts on his removal from the country.
