By Aaron Humes: A Canadian national was left injured and is now hospitalized following a violent incident on Marvi Gainey Street, Caye Caulker Village on Sunday evening.
Upon arrival, officers were escorted by Nelbert Choc Sr., a resident of the Black Neighborhood, to a room where they found 47-year-old Charles Sanford bleeding from injuries to his right ear and the left side of his forehead. Sanford also exhibited visible swelling on his head.
Initial police investigations suggest that the conflict involved two local individuals: Nelbert Choc Jr., 19, and Idelso Acosta, 52, both of Marvi Gainey Street. It is reported that during the altercation, Acosta attempted to attack Choc Sr. with a machete. Choc Jr. then retaliated by grabbing a 2×4 board and throwing it towards Acosta; however, the board missed its intended target and struck Sanford, who was exiting the residence.
Sanford was quickly transported to the Caye Caulker Health Center, then was later transferred to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in Belize City, where he remains in critical but stable condition.
Following the incident, both Nelbert Choc Jr. and Idelso Acosta were taken into custody at the Caye Caulker Police Station for further investigation.
