By Horace Palacio: On April 26, 2024, a Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) contingent of nearly 70 soldiers, primarily from the Royal 22e Régiment, wrapped up Operation Helios. This month-long mission successfully trained 330 military personnel from CARICOM nations (the Bahamas, Belize, and Jamaica) in advance of their deployment to Haiti under the Kenya-led Multinational Security Support Mission (MMSS).

The mission bolstered the capabilities of Caribbean forces as they prepare to support the Haitian National Police in combating armed gangs and restoring order. Colonel Tarik Messousa, FAC Commander for the operation, praised the results, stating, “It is impressive to see what Canada can deliver in terms of expertise and training […] we achieved our goal.”

Jamaican officials expressed satisfaction with the results. Chancellor Kamina Johnson noted, “We have completed training on operations and special forces, on infrastructure, hostage recovery, etc… This is the work that needs to be done here to ensure that we are ready to provide support whenever we are asked.”

Jamaican Commander Kevron Henry expressed confidence in his troops’ preparedness, stating they are “capable of intervening and carrying out high-intensity operations” to stabilize Haiti or other troubled regions, adding, “According to our assessment, we are capable of confronting the challenges that may arise in any environment, including Port-au-Prince.”
