By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Luis López of Honduras claimed victory in 2024’s Holy Saturday Cross Country Cycling Classic, setting a blistering course record. Two years ago, Belizean Oscar Quiroz brought the garland home, igniting national pride. As the 95th edition of this iconic race approaches, the question on everyone’s mind is: can a Belizean reclaim the title this year?

Belize’s top contenders—Oscar Quiroz, Derrick Chavarria, Cory Williams, Carlton Robinson, and Jyven Gonzalez—are gearing up to take on the grueling 139.9-mile journey from Belize City to San Ignacio and back. Quiroz, the 2023 champion, remains a formidable force, while Chavarria has honed his skills on the international stage, gaining valuable experience. Williams, a Belizean-American and runner-up in 2023, is another strong challenger, and Robinson, known for his resilience, is ready to make his mark. Gonzalez has shown consistent improvement, positioning himself as a strong competitor.

Other Belizeans expected to make an impact include Derrick Chavarria’s brother, Joslyn Chavarria Jr., along with seasoned cyclists Giovanni Lovell, Byron Pope, Goran Gabourel, and Shawn Codd. Rising Under-23 riders like Jaylen Briceño and Delton Rojas add to the country’s depth, making this year’s race one of the most exciting in recent history.

The competition will be fierce, with elite cyclists from Guatemala, Mexico, the United States, Colombia, Great Britain, and Venezuela, joining the fray. International riders have consistently posed a challenge, and their presence ensures a fierce battle for the coveted garland.

As the nation’s most celebrated cycling event, the Holy Saturday Cross Country Cycling Classic promises high-speed drama, endurance, and strategic racing. Belizean fans will be cheering loudly, hoping to see one of our own cross the finish line first and reclaim the glory.
