79

Here is a call for papers for a special issue of Nova Religio. The deadline for submission of abstracts is February 1, 2024. [Many thanks to Peter Jordens for bringing this item to our attention.]

Description: Nova Religio, the quarterly journal on alternative and emergent religions, is seeking articles for a special issue dedicated to the Afro-Cuban tradition of Lucumí/Santería. Papers on other Afro-Cuban religions will be considered on a case-by-case basis. The theme for this issue is the intersection of ordinary ethics as in “the field of action or practical judgment” (Michael Lambek, Ordinary Ethics: Anthropology, Language and Action, Fordham University Press, 2010, 9) and micropractices those “routine and intimate sequences of operations that can be broken down into more minute units of activity” (Elizabeth Pérez, Religion in the Kitchen: Cooking, Talking, & the Making of Black Atlantic Traditions, NYU, 2016, 9).

From this focal point, writers are encouraged to explore any number of topics: gender/sexuality, race, aesthetics, economies, clothing and adornment, daily devotions, divination, food preparation, and so on.

Deadlines: Abstract of 150 words due by February 1, 2024; encouraged papers due by July 31, 2024, completed papers between 8,000-10,000 words including endnotes are due by October 31, 2024.

For more information or to submit an abstract, please contact Eugenia Rainey at e.rainey@dartmouth.edu. Please contact Eugenia Rainey to receive a copy of the Style Sheet for a paper to be submitted to Nova Religio.
