By Aaron Humes: The Cabinet of Belize has taken note of the upcoming Fourth Trade Policy Review (TPR) before the World Trade Organization (WTO), scheduled for May 2026. This review is a crucial mechanism for WTO member countries to assess and discuss trade policies and practices.
The TPR aims to:
– Examine Belize’s trade policies and practices: The review will assess Belize’s compliance with WTO agreements and evaluate the impact of its trade policies on the global trading system.
– Promote transparency and understanding: The TPR process fosters dialogue between Belize and other WTO members, allowing for the exchange of information and clarification on trade policies.
Belize is required to submit a comprehensive report outlining its trade policies, practices, and progress since the last review, and be prepared to defend its trade policies and practices before the WTO, addressing any concerns raised by other member countries.
The government has begun preparations for the TPR, recognizing the importance of this process for Belize’s trade relations and economic development. Stakeholder consultations and inter-ministerial coordination will be crucial in ensuring a successful review.
