Cabinet receives update on People’s Constitution Commission recommendations; headed to House in May

By Aaron Humes: At last week’s Cabinet meeting, officials were informed about the ongoing technical review of the recommendations presented by the People’s Constitution Commission (PCC). This review aims to establish a structured methodology that will help define and legally assess these proposals as part of a roadmap for potential constitutional reform.

Dr Louis Zabaneh, Minister of Constitutional Affairs, told reporters that the Ministry has met four times with its former chair, Anthony Chanona, as well as other groups representing differing perspectives. The ministry is also collaborating closely with the Attorney General’s office and has enlisted constitutional lawyers from the UK to bolster their evaluation of the recommendations.

During the latest cabinet session, Dr Zabaneh said he shared the findings from the UK lawyers, emphasizing the importance of these recommendations in shaping the future of the constitution. “I shared that with Cabinet, this last Cabinet meeting, and, we are planning, the third week of April for Cabinet to have an all-day retreat to go through all those recommendations, because by early May we are obliged to present, Cabinet decisions, to the House,” he stated.

It is expected that the people of Belize will vote in a referendum to adopt the recommendations presented to the House, but the exact procedure will need to be spelled out.
