By Aaron Humes: Cabinet, during its meeting this week, endorsed a pivotal loan aimed at constructing a wastewater collection and treatment system in Caye Caulker, Belize District. This initiative is set to improve the essential services provided by Belize Water Services Limited (BWSL) and ensure better sanitation and environmental protection for the community.
As part of this endeavor, Cabinet has agreed to seek approval from the House of Representatives for a sovereign-guarantee agreement with the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) for a substantial loan of US$10 million. This funding will be instrumental in facilitating the necessary upgrades and improvements to the wastewater system, reflecting the government’s commitment to enhancing public health and environmental stewardship.
Additionally, the Cabinet has formally endorsed the updated National Water Resources Management Policy, Strategy, and Action Plan for 2024-2034. This comprehensive framework is designed to provide a coordinated and evidence-based approach to managing the nation’s freshwater resources sustainably. The updated plan emphasizes financial sustainability and aims to ensure that all water-related policies and initiatives are aligned effectively.
To implement these strategies, Cabinet has directed all ministries and statutory bodies responsible for water-related functions to collaborate and align their activities with the new National Water Resources Management Policy. The Belize Water Advisory Council will play a crucial role in this collaborative effort, fostering a unified approach to the nation’s water resource management challenges.
