Cabinet endorses $4.7 million financing mechanism for Rural Electrification in Southern Belize

By Zoila Palma:  Cabinet has endorsed the use of retroactive financing through the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to support a rural electrification programme aimed at expanding access to electricity in underserved communities in Southern Belize.

The decision was made during Cabinet’s meeting on October 6, 2026. Under the mechanism, the Government of Belize can self-finance up to US$4.7 million in project costs, which would subsequently be reimbursed under the loan.

The programme aims to provide sustainable, reliable and modern electricity to unserved and underserved rural and Indigenous communities, improving access to essential services and supporting development in Southern Belize.
