By Aaron Humes: In the Cabinet Brief announcement issued this afternoon, Cabinet has once again officially designated two weekends in August as GST Free Back to School weekends, as part of the ongoing Plan Belize 2.0 initiative.
Shoppers will be able to purchase essential school supplies and other items without the additional General Sales Tax (GST) during specified dates. The first GST-free weekend is set for Thursday, July 31 to Saturday, August 2, (also Emancipation Day weekend) followed by another opportunity from Friday, August 15 to Sunday, August 17.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to take advantage of these weekends to stock up on school supplies, uniforms, and other necessities for their children as the new academic year approaches. Businesses are also expected to benefit from the increased consumer activity during these designated shopping days.
This initiative is aligned with the government’s efforts to support families and stimulate the economy during a pivotal time of year as it previously did at Christmas. As the school year draws near, the GST-free weekends provide a welcome opportunity for communities to save money while preparing for the new school term.
The People’s United Party campaigned on legislating such carve-outs after the success of the Christmas period but has not done so. No figures for how much in taxes were forgone during that period has been reported.
