By Aaron Humes: Last Friday, the leaders of Belize, Guatemala, and Mexico convened for a successful high level trilateral meeting in Calakmul, Campeche, where they established a commitment to enhance cooperation in various sectors.
Per today’s Cabinet Brief, there was unanimous agreement to create the Selva Maya Reserve, a biocultural corridor that will serve as a trinational park. Covering an impressive 5.3 million hectares, the Selva Maya Reserve stands as the second largest reserve in the Americas, highlighting the countries’ dedication to environmental conservation and sustainable development.
Belize was represented by Prime Minister John Briceno and Minister of Foreign Affairs Francis Fonseca, who reported to Cabinet that “In addition, the three countries renewed their commitment to peace, democracy, and development. They also committed to greater cooperation in the areas of regional security, the environment, and economic development.”
Mexico presented an update on the ambitious Tren Maya Project, a critical infrastructure initiative aimed at improving connectivity in the region. The attendees agreed on the necessity of engaging technical teams to explore the potential expansion of the Tren Maya into Belize and Guatemala, a move that could significantly enhance trade and tourism.
In addition to the trilateral discussions, Cabinet was briefed on a separate bilateral meeting between Belize and Mexico, where key areas for collaboration were identified, including security, trade and market access, agriculture, culture, education, and energy.
