By Aaron Humes: The Cabinet of Belize has approved amendments to the fees associated with drug registration applications under the Drug Regulations. The decision, made by the Ministry of Health and Wellness, is set to streamline the registration process for pharmaceuticals, ensuring quicker access to safe and effective medicines for the Belizean population.
Under the revised fee structure, the cost for the Reliance Pathway—designed to facilitate quicker evaluations of drugs already approved by recognized national authorities—will see a substantial reduction from $500 to just $100. This change is anticipated to promote wider participation among stakeholders who might previously have been deterred by the higher fees, fostering a more collaborative approach to drug registration.
Conversely, the fees for full dossier reviews will increase from $100 to $200. This adjustment reflects the comprehensive level of assessment required for products that have undergone reviews by other recognized national authorities. By aligning the fees more closely with the actual work involved, the Ministry hopes to enhance the rigor of the review process while maintaining an efficient regulatory environment.
The Ministry of Health and Wellness emphasizes that these changes not only aim to boost the participation of stakeholders in the drug registration process but also aim to support overarching public health goals. The adjustments are expected to facilitate faster regulatory decisions, ultimately leading to more timely access to quality-assured medicines for the citizens of Belize.
