Cabinet approves plan to acquire Fortis Inc. energy assets

By Zoila Palma:  Cabinet met on October 14, 2025, and endorsed an agreement between the Government of Belize and Fortis Inc. of Canada for the purchase of the company’s electricity assets in Belize.

With Cabinet’s approval, Prime Minister John Briceño will table a Bill in Parliament seeking authorization to acquire Fortis Inc.’s three hydropower plants and its 33.3% shareholding in Belize Electricity Limited (BEL).
