Cabinet approves emergency measures to enhance Belize’s power generation capacity; Fortis deal approved, goes to Senate today

By Aaron Humes: The Cabinet of Belize has granted approval for the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) to declare an emergency situation regarding the country’s electricity generation services. This declaration allows for immediate action to be taken, including the procurement of 80 megawatts of solar generation capacity, alongside a proposed project by Energy Transfer aimed at generating approximately 50 megawatts of power using natural gas ethane.

The approval comes as Belize faces increasing challenges in maintaining reliable electricity supply, necessitating swift intervention to secure the nation’s energy future. The Cabinet’s decision reflects a commitment to exploring diverse energy sources to enhance resilience against potential disruptions.

In another crucial development, the Government of Belize has reached an agreement with Fortis Inc. of Canada for the purchase of the company’s electricity sector assets within the country. This strategic acquisition includes three hydropower plants currently operated by Fortis Belize, as well as a 33.3 percent shareholding in Belize Electricity Limited (BEL).

Prime Minister John Briceño  introduced in Parliament on Friday a Bill seeking authorization for these acquisitions. This legislative move aims to solidify the government’s control over critical energy infrastructure, paving the way for more sustainable and reliable power generation in Belize. That Bill was approved by the Lower House and is being debated in the Senate today, with the transaction valued at $256 million to be completed by November 15.
