Businessman leaves Belize after tax assessment, citing pressure on start-ups

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belizean businessman has claimed he was forced to leave the country due to fear because of tax assessments shortly after launching his new business.

According to the businessman, he had only recently opened his small business and began marketing and networking when he was contacted by the Belize Tax Service, which informed him that a mandatory registration had already been completed and a Tax Identification Number (TIN) had been assigned for business and general sales tax purposes.

Further investigation revealed that the Belize Tax Service had obtained information on the businessman via the Custom’s department’s ASYCUDA World system and without informing him, without his ID card and without the business registration from Business registry, he had been registered and was informed until after.

He told BBN that he cooperated with the process and engaged with the department in an effort to operate legally. However, he requested that tax obligations begin from 2025, the year his business officially started operating since his registration at Belize Business Registry also showed this date. The businessman says that he attended the mobile events in an effort to get assistance.

The businessman alleges that authorities instead assessed him for a period covering two previous years, resulting in a tax liability he disputed.

He further said that the financial pressure led him to close his small business shortly after launching and leave Belize, abandoning his long-term entrepreneurial goal.

The businessman also referenced recent high-profile enforcement cases, saying developments involving other businessmen including the Andrew Munnings case influenced his decision to depart due to concerns.

The situation has renewed discussion among small business owners about tax compliance procedures and the challenges faced by start-ups during their early stages of operation.
