By Breaking Belize News Staff: Harish Kishanchand, a 46-year-old Belizean businessman, will face trial in the High Court on charges of human trafficking following accusations of abuse and exploitation by a 21-year-old Indian national who worked under him. The young man has alleged mistreatment, non-payment, and the withholding of his passport by Kishanchand, who operates Chic’s and Harry’s Import in Belize City. The alleged abuse reportedly took place between January and November 2022, after the victim was promised a job with reasonable hours, fair pay, and proper accommodation.
According to the victim’s statement, his working conditions in Belize deviated drastically from the job offered in India. Instead of six-hour shifts, he allegedly worked long hours, with no days off, and was only paid one month’s salary in nearly a year of employment. He reported enduring poor living conditions, limited food, and physical abuse when questioning his pay and passport.
In a preliminary hearing on Tuesday, Director of Public Prosecutions Cheryl-Lynn Vidal submitted evidence, including witness statements and digital records, to the court. Defense attorney Jacqueline Willoughby contested the use of some documents but ultimately withdrew her objections, reserving arguments for the High Court trial set for January 2025. Kishanchand, who posted a new bail set at $6,000, will remain free pending his upcoming trial.
