By Breaking Belize News Staff: The freedom of Orange Walk businessman Jonathan Alexander Burgos is now in question after his surety applied to revoke his bail, leading to his remand at the Belize Central Prison.
Burgos, 39, who was charged earlier this year with obtaining property by deception, was out on bail in connection with allegations that he swindled a Belize Coast Guard officer out of $5,000 through a fake vehicle sale on Facebook. However, court officials say he failed to show up for his scheduled hearings since July, prompting the issuance of a bench warrant for his arrest.
After being detained, Burgos was brought before a Senior Magistrate in Belize City, where he apologized for missing court and claimed he had been working in San Pedro and was uncertain of his actual court dates. The Magistrate dismissed the excuse as unacceptable and noted that his freedom is now at risk.
His surety, who initially signed for his bail, informed the court that Burgos was not answering his calls and had failed to appear in court, leading him to request revocation of the bond. As a result, Burgos was remanded until a bail hearing application is heard Friday morning before the Senior Magistrate in Court #6.
Burgos, who appeared unrepresented, expressed optimism that even if his current surety withdraws, he may still be able to secure another. The court will determine today whether he will be allowed to remain out on bail or remain behind bars until the conclusion of his trial.
