Businessman Aaron Wilson settles unlawful detention lawsuit against GOB out of court for undisclosed amount, says it was ‘never about the money’

By Breaking Belize News Staff: Businessman Aaron Wilson says the Government of Belize has settled his claim for unlawful detention and malicious prosecution out of court, bringing an end to a nearly two-year legal ordeal stemming from a boisterous behaviour charge that was never prosecuted.

Speaking to reporters outside the High Court on Monday, Wilson said he could not disclose the amount of the settlement but stressed that the resolution was never about financial compensation.

“Today’s outcome was never about the money,” Wilson said. “I’m just grateful to finally put this behind me.”

Wilson’s claim arose from an incident at the Ladyville Police Station on the night of March 8, 2024, when a female police officer accused him of behaving boisterously, detained him, charged him, and later failed to prosecute the matter in court.

According to Wilson, when he was summoned to appear in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court to answer the charge, no information or complaint was filed, and he was never arraigned. The matter remained unresolved until Monday’s settlement.

Court records show that Wilson’s claim was formally outlined in a two-page letter dated July 24, 2024, submitted by his attorney, Norman Rodriguez, to the Attorney General’s Ministry. The intended claim was also addressed to then Commissioner of Police, Chester Williams and the offending police officer, who accused Wilson.

The claim was brought under Section 3 of the Public Authorities Protection Act, Chapter 31, alleging unlawful detention, malicious prosecution, and trespass to the person. It was listed before Derick Sylvester.

Wilson alleged that at approximately 8:00 p.m. on March 8, 2024, he entered the Ladyville Police Station peacefully to inquire whether one of his employees was being detained or charged. He claimed that the on-duty officer, without lawful excuse or evidence, detained and charged him for boisterous behaviour despite there being no basis to support such an offence.

In his intended claim, Wilson further alleged that he was detained for more than 22 hours, causing him emotional distress, reputational harm, loss of income from his auto dealership, and the inability to fulfill a contractual obligation—ultimately resulting in at least one civil suit against him.

Outside the courtroom, Wilson said he was relieved the matter was resolved without going to trial.

“The back and forth in court over almost two years affected my business and my life,” he said. “Now I can finally move forward.”

Wilson added that he was grateful the ordeal at the hands of a police officer was finally at an end and that the settlement brought a sense of closure and justice.
