By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) has issued a directive for businesses in the Stann Creek District to close by 6:00 pm on Saturday as Tropical Storm Sara approaches. At 3:00 pm, Sara was positioned approximately 110 miles southeast of Belize City and is expected to make landfall on Sunday. The storm is moving west at 5 mph with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph.

NEMO has emphasized the urgency for all residents and businesses in the Stann Creek District to stay alert and activate their emergency plans. Preliminary rainfall data indicates that 5 to 10 inches of rain have already fallen across various regions, with localized amounts potentially exceeding 15 inches. An additional 2 to 6 inches of rain is expected through Sunday evening, significantly increasing the risk of flooding.

“Businesses in the Stann Creek District are to close at 6 pm today and are to remain closed until the ALL CLEAR is issued,” NEMO said in its 3:00 pm advisory.

After 4:30 pm in Dangriga, the weather was gloomy but it wasn’t raining Moses Lopez, who sent us a number of photographs, reported.

This measure is taken to ensure the safety of employees and customers as the storm approaches. NEMO advises all residents to stay informed through official updates and to take necessary precautions to protect themselves and their property.

Motorists are also advised to drive with extreme care due to slippery road conditions and potential local flooding. Avoid driving through floodwaters and stay updated on road conditions through official channels.

NEMO reminds everyone that the arrival of Tropical Storm Sara is imminent, and staying safe should remain a top priority. Ensure your emergency plans are up to date, stock up on essential supplies today, and stay informed about weather updates from reliable sources.

Stay safe and stay informed as Tropical Storm Sara continues to impact Belize.
