By Aaron Humes: A 52-year-old business owner of Alpha Male Shop, Belize City, reported to police that she had been scammed in a deception scheme involving a fraudulent payment.
The incident occurred on Thursday, September 25, around 5:15 PM when the shop owner received a message via the Messenger application from an individual expressing interest in purchasing a white leather Polo tennis valued at $320. After placing the order, the customer sent a purported screenshot of an online deposit.
However, events took a turn when a taxi driver arrived to pick up the order. The owner discovered that the payment had not been transferred to her account. Further inspection of the supposed transfer slip revealed it to be fake, prompting the owner to inform the police.
Upon receiving the call for assistance, officers quickly acted on the reported scam. They detained the taxi driver, who had been hired to collect the item, and traced the scam back to a nearby location. This led to the arrest of 22-year-old Cuba Javier Perrote, who was apprehended at Pound Yard while waiting to receive the tennis.
A search warrant was executed at Perrote’s residence, where the stolen Polo tennis shoes were located. The items were confirmed to belong to Alpha Male Shop, and the police took photographs for evidence.
Cuba Perrote has been charged with obtaining property by deception and remains in custody as investigations are ongoing.
