By Zoila Palma: The Business Chamber of Spanish Lookout has strongly condemned the recent wave of robberies targeting delivery drivers across Belize, describing the situation as a growing threat to public safety, commerce, and national stability.
In a statement issued following the killing of Caribbean Chicken delivery driver Mark Gabourel, the Chamber said it was “deeply saddened and outraged by the senseless killing,” adding that the incident highlights “the alarming escalation of violence and lawlessness facing hardworking Belizeans.”
The Chamber warned that delivery drivers, small businesses, and consumers are becoming increasingly vulnerable, noting that “the continued lack of decisive action sends the wrong message to criminals while leaving law-abiding citizens exposed.” It stressed that no one should have to fear for their life while trying to earn an honest living.
The Business Chamber urged authorities to take swift, coordinated action to apprehend those responsible and restore public confidence in safety.
The statement emphasized the need for increased patrols, targeted enforcement, and meaningful consequences for violent offenders.
The Chamber also expressed solidarity with the victim’s family, coworkers, and all delivery personnel who face daily risks to keep the economy moving, concluding that Belize “cannot accept violence as normal” and that protecting lives and livelihoods must be treated as a national priority.
