By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The Belize Bus Association (BBA) says its members will continue providing bus services on Tuesday, August 25, calling off the previously announced possible discontinuation.
The association had warned that operators could park their buses if the diesel subsidy, which expired in July, was not reinstated.
Last week the Ministry of Transport informed the BBA that a Cabinet paper would be prepared for consideration on August 25. The association says Minister Louis Zabaneh requested additional time on Monday to prepare and table the proposal at Cabinet’s meeting on Tuesday, September 1.
Members unanimously agreed to keep operating, describing the decision as an additional sacrifice in the interest of the thousands of Belizeans who rely on public transportation daily.
The BBA notes that it first wrote to the Minister on July 15, before the subsidy expired, to give government time to address the rising cost of diesel and avoid disruption.
The association is urging Cabinet to treat the matter with urgency and deliver a solution that can be implemented immediately after next week’s meeting.
