By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Burrell Boom resident has been fined a total of $910 after pleading guilty to assaulting his common-law wife and stealing two silver bangles from her during a domestic dispute.
Thirty-year-old Marvin Garma of Kiskidee Street, Fresh Pond area, appeared unrepresented before a magistrate in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court where he was charged with common assault upon his common-law wife and theft of two silver bangles valued at $185.
Garma pleaded guilty to both offenses and was handed two non-custodial sentences totaling $910. He was fined $405 for the assault charge and $505 for theft. He has until June 30 and July 31, 2026, respectively, to pay the fines or face prison terms of two and three months in default.
During mitigation, Garma admitted to pushing and choking his common-law wife around her neck.
At his arraignment, Garma also blurted out in court, “They deh bangles deh by the bathroom, what will happen then?” — a statement that appeared to indicate where the stolen jewelry had been left. However, the items were reportedly never recovered or returned to the complainant.
According to police, the incident occurred on May 4, 2026, at the couple’s home in Burrell Boom Village. The woman reported that she and Garma began arguing over his drinking habits after he had allegedly been consuming alcohol throughout the night into the morning.
Police say the argument escalated after insults were exchanged, and Garma allegedly grabbed the woman by the neck and attempted to kick her. The woman reportedly ran inside the house, armed herself with a crowbar, and later called police for assistance.
Investigators say that during the confrontation, Garma entered the room where the woman had locked herself in and allegedly took the two silver bangles after they fell to the ground. Despite repeated requests from the woman for the jewelry to be returned, Garma allegedly refused, leading her to pursue court action.
