Bullets fly in Orange Walk, one man down

By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): A man is facing an attempted murder charge following a drive-by shooting in Orange Walk Town that left another man hospitalised.

According to the Belize Police Department, the incident occurred on Sunday, June 28, 2026, at around 3:05 a.m., on Guadalupe Street. Police say a grey four-door vehicle was travelling west, between a night club and an auto parts business, when a black vehicle attempted to overtake it on the left. Several gunshots reportedly rang out from the passing vehicle before it sped off. The driver continued on and realised that one of his passengers, 28-year-old Eric Martinez, a labourer of Trial Farm Village, had been shot. He drove straight to the Northern Regional Hospital for help.

At the hospital, police found Martinez alive but suffering from gunshot wounds to his upper body, including his right shoulder and the right side of his neck. He was issued a medico-legal form, admitted, and later transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital for further treatment.

Scene of crime personnel processed both the vehicle and the location, recovering shell casings from the scene. In the course of the investigation, police located 46-year-old David Gabourel, a Belizean business owner of Orange Walk Town, informed him of the report, cautioned him, and advised him of his constitutional rights. He chose to remain silent. Searches of his home and vehicle were carried out, and police reported finding nothing incriminating.

Following the recording of several witness statements and further investigation, police swore to an information and complaint, obtained a warrant, and formally charged David Gabourel with the crime of attempted murder. He was again cautioned and chose to remain silent.
