By Breaking Belize News Staff: Almost four years after a tragic crash took the life of his close friend, 36-year-old Bullet Tree resident David Raymundo Soriano has pleaded guilty to causing death by careless conduct in the fatal traffic accident that killed Geraldo Antonio Lopez.
The accident occurred on November 5, 2021, between Miles 65 and 66 on the George Price Highway in the Cayo District. Soriano, an A/C technician, had been attempting to overtake while driving from Belmopan to San Ignacio when he collided with another vehicle, flinging two passengers from the pan of his pickup. Lopez, a longtime friend of Soriano’s, died from the impact.
Initially charged with manslaughter by negligence, Soriano entered a plea deal with the Crown and accepted full responsibility for the crash during his court appearance before Justice Nigel Pilgrim.
Justice Pilgrim adjourned the sentencing to Tuesday, July 22, to allow time for the victim impact statement from Lopez’s family. The judge emphasized that sentencing should not proceed without understanding the toll on the deceased’s loved ones.
Soriano, represented by attorney Ravhel Montejo, expressed remorse and stated through his lawyer:
“He was not just a passenger—he was a friend of mine. I fully take responsibility.”
He also told the court he contributed $2,000 toward Lopez’s funeral expenses. The prosecution was led by Portia Staine-Ferguson from the DPP’s Office.
Soriano remains out on bail until sentencing.
