By Zoila Palma: Build Belize Inc. has completed its 2026 “Funding Kitchens, Feeding Children” campaign, providing kitchen equipment and supplies to 56 primary schools across all six districts of Belize.
The initiative, carried out in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, Youth, Sports and Diaspora Relations, supports the Ministry of Education’s National Healthy Start Feeding Programme, which serves more than 7,000 children. The campaign concluded on October 6 with a formal handover of donated equipment and supplies to the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology at Ebenezer Methodist Primary School.
Through the campaign, more than 400 items valued at approximately $100,000 were distributed to participating schools. The supplies included refrigerators, freezers, stoves, gas tanks, fire extinguishers, pots, pans, cutting boards and other essential kitchen equipment identified by the schools. The initiative aims to strengthen school kitchens and ensure that children who depend on the feeding programme receive nutritious meals prepared in safer, better-equipped facilities.
Build Belize Inc. credited the campaign’s success to contributions from government ministries, the Belizean diaspora, local and international donors, corporate partners, school administrators, teachers, cooks and volunteers.
Special recognition was given to Midway Wholesale Depot, which donated equipment and provided staff, vehicles and logistical support to coordinate deliveries to all 56 schools. Fabrigas Belize Ltd. also contributed 37 fire extinguishers to improve safety in school kitchens nationwide.
As part of the initiative, Build Belize Inc. Chair and Ambassador for Diaspora Relations Sandhya Murphy, along with the organization’s Director, David Ahuja, visited 21 schools across Toledo, Stann Creek, Cayo, Corozal, Orange Walk and Belize District. Murphy said the visits highlighted the importance of providing schools with the resources needed to support children’s nutrition and learning. She noted that the programme allows children to receive freshly prepared meals using local ingredients and products rather than relying solely on boxed or pre-packaged lunches.
Murphy said the campaign reflects Build Belize Inc.’s broader commitment to supporting children’s education, physical well-being and nutrition, while also highlighting the importance of mental health and emotional wellness.
The organization, a U.S.-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit and a registered nonprofit in Belize, works with the diaspora, businesses and other partners to mobilize resources for education, healthcare and community services.
