Budget Speech: Revenues for 2024 projected to top 1.5 billion, expenditure gap narrows

By Aaron Humes: The 2024 financial estimates call for revenues of $1.51 billion collected by the Government of Belize according to Minister of Finance John Briceño.

Expenditure by the Government amounts to $1.604 billion.

According to the Prime Minister, the Government will pay out 73 cents in every dollar for recurrent expenditure and just 27 cents available for capital projects. This includes 30 cents in every dollar for wages and seven cents for pensions.

In the area of capital expenditure, the Prime Minister said $35 million will fund the continued expansion of National Health Insurance (NHI) as promised to Northside Belize City, the Cayes, and the Cayo District. This includes the $12 million profit from the nationalized Boledo lotteries.

Infrastructure priorities include upgrades to the Philip Goldson and George Price Highways as well as street and road upgrades countrywide.

Monies will also be allocated to the construction of the San Pedro Hospital, equipment upgrades for the Belize Police Department, the continued grocery bag and assistance program, and other key projects.

The Budget Debate will be continued on March 20, 21 and 22.
