By Breaking Belize News Staff: Belize Telemedia Limited CEO Ivan Tesucum says the company does not view satellite internet provider Starlink as a direct competitor to its internet services in Belize.
Speaking in an interview with 7 News Belize, Tesucum described Starlink as a “complementary service” and pointed to BTL’s extensive fibre network as one of the company’s key advantages.
Tesucum said BTL has more than 2,000 miles of fibre infrastructure distributed throughout Belize and argued that fibre technology allows the company to deliver high speed connectivity directly to homes.
“We see Starlink as a complementary service, not a competing service,” Tesucum told 7 News Belize.
The BTL CEO explained that Starlink relies on satellite technology, while BTL’s terrestrial fibre network provides a different method of delivering internet connectivity.
Tesucum said BTL’s network passes more than 100,000 homes across the country and maintained that the company’s internet prices remain affordable.
His comments come as satellite internet has expanded the options available to Belizean consumers, particularly in locations where traditional telecommunications infrastructure may be less accessible.
BTL, however, is positioning its fibre infrastructure as a central part of its strategy as the company moves into its next phase of development.
The company recently reported a record $36.9 million net profit for the 2025 to 2026 fiscal year and says its future plans include strengthening network reliability and accelerating technology adoption.
