By Aaron Humes: This evening, members of the Belize Communication Workers for Justice pressure group reported they had the outline of a deal with former employer Belize Telemedia Limited (BTL) to pay outstanding severance and interest.
Group leader Emily Turner told reporters outside the Belize City Labour Department office this evening that while specifics still need to be worked out, a total of 564 ex-employees, including those not a part of their group, will be paid.
Following weeks of demonstrations and advocacy for their rights, BTL communicated with the BCWJ Monday evening, revealing that the board of directors approved payments to former employees who fall outside the six-year limitation period for severance claims. This decision marks a notable reversal for the company, which has faced pressure from the workers and community over the matter.
Turner expressed optimism about the outcome, stating, “We have some information; they have some information that they will share with us and so that we can look at some of that data that we have a gap with. The systems that we have digitalized since 2005 to 2025. Those that data is now in the systems. Those data can be validated. So that’s not the challenge. So, now we are just gonna, we’re gonna have to go back and focus on how do we establish that data that we have in that, that we have some gaps on. So now in terms of what we have accomplished today, we accomplished a lot in terms of we’ve arrived at BTL has agreed to pay the severance. We do have now – we are discussing the interest payment that need that would be done and, on both sides, we have to take it back to our groups. And we will be discussing those figures. We are expecting something to come back to us from BTL by Thursday and then we are supposed to take back something to our members over the weekend and then we intend to meet next week. Our intention is to try to close this off in the next two weeks. That’s one of the things that BTL came with and we wanna give, wanna applaud them for that.”
The BTL board instructed top managers to meet with the BCWJ to finalize the terms of payment. The workers, who have been vocal in their demands, are hopeful that this meeting will lead to prompt disbursement of the owed funds.
