By Aaron Humes: Belize Sugar Industries Ltd. (BSI) has launched a multi-year Clean Seed & Varieties Program to provide disease-free, genetically pure sugarcane planting material to farmers nationwide.

The program aims to enhance industry resilience to drought, pests, and diseases like Fusarium, recently detected in local fields. It will deliver clean seed to growers, including those in AgGrowPro and the Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre’s climate resilience initiative.

Key program highlights include a partnership with Florida Crystals Corporation for tissue culture plantlets; new greenhouse and shade house facilities at BSI; a capacity to handle 750,000 plantlets annually, replanting 5,000 acres yearly; and making commercial clean seed available to farmers in 2028, with a focus on improving tons of cane per acre (TCA) and tons of sugar per acre (TSA).

The program complements BSI’s variety development work and supports climate-smart practices.
