By Aaron Humes: Belize’s northern sugar cane industry is facing an existential crisis due to climate-related challenges such as Fusarium, which have severely impacted cane supply. Against this backdrop, the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association (BSCFA) and Belize Sugar Industries Limited (BSI) signed an addendum today, Wednesday, January 7, extending the current Commercial Agreement for another year.

This extension will facilitate a smooth start to the 2026 crop season, slated to begin later this month. Both parties reiterated their intention to work closely together to ensure the success of this crucial crop and to consider changes to the Commercial Agreement, signed in 2024 after a protracted protest, based on the recommendations made by the Commission of Inquiry (COI).

The signing of the addendum comes after months of negotiations between BSCFA and BSI, the latter preferring a shorter tenure and the former as much as seven years.

It is hoped that this extension will enable producers and the factory to work together to overcome current challenges and secure a prosperous future for the industry.
