By Zoila Palma: The British High Commission in Belmopan hosted the 8th Cross-Government Meeting under the Ocean Country Partnership Programme (OCPP), gathering key Belizean agencies and UK partners to discuss marine protection and sustainable ocean governance.
The event emphasized collaboration in addressing marine challenges and advancing environmental goals.
The OCPP, part of the UK Government’s Blue Planet Fund, supports countries like Belize in strengthening marine science, reducing marine pollution, and improving inclusive ocean governance.
The meeting brought together representatives from institutions including the Department of the Environment, Ministry of Blue Economy, Fisheries Department, Ministry of Economic Transformation, Belize Agricultural Health Authority, and the National Biodiversity Office.
British High Commissioner Alistair White opened the meeting, reaffirming the UK’s commitment to Belize’s ocean sustainability efforts.
Closing reflections were shared by Zana Kristen Wade, Climate, Environment and Energy Officer, who encouraged continued cross-sector collaboration. Virtual technical support was provided by UK agencies including Defra, JNCC, CEFAS, the Marine Management Organisation, and the Blue Planet Fund.
In his remarks, White highlighted that the OCPP is more than funding and expertise—it represents a long-term partnership rooted in shared learning and co-creation.
The session reaffirmed both countries’ dedication to building marine resilience, strengthening coordination across sectors, and delivering tangible benefits for coastal ecosystems and communities.
