By Zoila Palma: The Belize Tourism Board (BTB) is calling on Belizeans and friends of Belize worldwide to support the Cayo District as it competes for the Green Destinations People’s Choice Award, an international recognition to be presented at ITB Berlin, the world’s largest tourism trade fair.
Cayo has already earned global acclaim, being recognized as a Top 100 Green Destination Stories destination for two consecutive years.
This year’s entry, titled “Loving Cayo: A Harmonious Blend of Conservation & Culture,” highlights the collective efforts of local communities, conservationists, tourism operators, and cultural stewards who work daily to protect the district’s natural environment and preserve its rich heritage.
The story showcases initiatives ranging from protected areas and eco-lodges to community-led efforts that safeguard Cayo’s cultural identity.

Voters are required to enter an email address, select Option A: Americas, then choose Option G: Belize, Cayo – “A harmonious blend of conservation and culture.”
Voting takes approximately one minute and closes on January 15, 2026.
The Belize Tourism Board is urging supporters to share the voting link and help bring the international award home to Cayo.
