Briceño used his 2026 State of the Nation Address to reiterate Government’s plan to increase the national minimum wage from $5 to $6 per hour — a 20 percent increase. The Prime Minister said almost 50,000 wage earners benefited when the minimum wage was raised to $5 and could look forward to the next adjustment “in the near future.”
Government has been publicly discussing the proposed $6 wage throughout 2026. As recently as August, however, Briceño said discussions with the business community were continuing and warned that the timing must take into account employers’ ability to absorb higher labour costs without cutting jobs or raising prices. No specific implementation date had been announced at that point.
